Many Chessplayers are ashamed of what they are, but I
am proud to be one - I consider playing a tournament game equivalent to entering
a jungle naked knowing in advance you may be attacked in the dark by
unknown predators - winning a Chess game should be accompanied by a Tarzan
yell. To me it is trying to make sense of the unknowable, setting sail on the
Atlantic in a sailboat, basically an awesome and very humbling challenge.
Grandmaster Dzindzichashvili told me something funny one day, " Brian, in my
experience, if someone tells you he is a good Chessplayer, he is one of the
worst you will ever meet! ". Grandmaster DZ was an early Chess teacher of both
Kasparov and Karpov.
Kasparov is definitely an awesome Chess player, I think
the most incredible one ever invented. Even when he was 18, his play astonished
me and I thought, " He is already better than Fischer in irrational positions".
His play is always very dynamic. One could almost say that Fischer created
Karpov and Karpov created Kasparov.
Shirov is mindboggling and I wonder why he does so well
against Kramnik and so poorly against Kasparov. I am not sure exactly but I
think the score of their decisive slow games is something like Kasparov
- 12 Shirov - 0. From what I can
tell, Kasparov seems to outwork him and also seems to play more responsibly. It
reminds me a little of Frasier vs. Foreman - same style except Foreman was
bigger! Kasparov seems to try extra hard against Shirov, possibly trying to
prove his " enthusiastic amateur " description of Shirov. Shirov sued Kasparov
after their failed match which I thought was a very poor decision since it
wasn't Kasparov that withdrew the money offer, it was Rentero. I love everything
Shirov does and plays except for his vendetta against Kasparov. It is also
possible that this is a continuation of the Botvinnik-Tal match! Kasparov was a
student of Botvinnik's already at age 10 and Shirov was a Lat vian like Tal. The
Botvinnik school was noted for a serious scientific research approach to Chess
and the Latvian school was famous for breathtaking tactical melees - chaos
theory.The debate still rages!
How in the world does anyone keep beating Shirov
without ever losing to him? - Let me try to answer that question.

I used to play the White side of this position over and over
and over again against World Famous Rock Climber Pat Ament at the Univeristy of
Colorado Alfred E. Packer ( the stranded in a blizzard turned cannibal survivor
guy ) Grill in Boulder, Colorado 28 years ago. I guess we didn't fully exhaust
the position! Pat Ament is still going strong and had a big writeup in National
Geographic last year. I am not a rock climber by any means - I went once 2
summers agowith Dwight Sehler and our 14 year old daughters and Bobby "
the Butcher " Ascher - the rope held! - but I enjoyed reading Pat Ament's
autobigrapghy when I ran into him a after a 25 year break in a Denver Kinko's
and he gave me a copy of his book - Below is a description of one Pat's many
incredible Climbing Books.
